Grief Series 3

This is the final episode on grief and how to cope.  In this episode I share a few facts about grief, a few ways to lessen grief, and when its time to seek professional help.

What I know, from my own experience, is that gaining additional knowledge about the grieving process has helped smooth the process.  I can acknowledge where I am on my journey and hold reasonable expectations for moving forward.  I learned that the only way to get over grief is to go through the process.  You can put it off until you are ready, but you will not be fully alive until you face grief in your own way.

Overcoming grief is not easy and it is different for different people.  However, its hard work on everybody’s part.  So, during the process it is important to take care of yourself by eating, sleeping, exercising, and being kind to yourself.  Keep yourself healthy.  Here are some tips on how you can lessen the pain of grieving.

  • You can find other people who are going through similar challenges as you.  A local grief support group or online group may be a good place to share our feelings.
  • Make your health a priority.  Often people who are grieving forget to eat, ignore basic hygiene, eat poorly, or stay up too late.  Try not to fall into these bad habits.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol which can only add another problem to your already full plate

Keep in mind that everyone is different.  Some of us can deal with the grief process on our own while others may need help.  If you find yourself neglecting your personal hygiene, abusing drugs or alcohol, having suicidal thoughts, or cannot find anything enjoyable in life it may be time to seek professional help.

I hope this miniseries on grief has encouraged you to learn more.

Good luck and be well.
